We offer the best Salt Spring Organic Facials and Fusion Treatments which is much more than a traditional facial. Fusion treatments include the use of energy and using Intuitive Reiki, a truly insightful approach to healing skin issues is possible. Our beliefs and emotions impact our energy and can cause stagnation in our body. By checking ‘Chakras’ (energy centres) we can gain insight into what is blocking and causing disruptions to the body flow, directly impacting our health and wellbeing. The skin is the outward reflection of our inner health, by using this technique we can support each person in creating awareness around emotions being stored and we can help them release these emotions or blockages (including insights into diet issues) and create lasting healing. Lisa has created this very successful method for supporting the healing of Acne and Eczema. With the right energy releases, simple diet adjustments and lifestyle choices, clients can support their own lasting healing.

Along with our three Therapeutic Skin Care lines and various treatment oils and lotions that we freshly make by hand, clients can have a full spectrum treatment. Figs & Honey — make a resolution to treat yourself well

Lisa Sliwowska gives a treatment to a client with her own line of products.

On a dismal night last November — a night when most people wouldn’t be out unless they had to be — a cheery kitchen on Bayview proved the exception to the general blahs enveloping the island.

Maybe it was the champagne and hors d’oeuvres liberally circulating that inviting room, or perhaps it was the bountiful charm of host Lisa Sliwowska, the owner of Figs and Honey Beauty Therapy and Healing Arts Centre.

A party in celebration of the official launch of Figs and Honey’s product line, the event was a tribute to Sliwowska’s natural ability to make people feel welcome and comfortable. That ability is at the root of her calling as a beauty practitioner and healer.

While the line of women snapping up the new products at the party would seem to describe a well-established dominion, in fact Figs and Honey is a fairly recent phenomenon, although a long time coming.

The single-room spa attached to Sliwowska’s home was established only last year, the end result of many years spent travelling the world, diving into love and having children before the entrepreneur finally came back to a very early passion.

Sliwowska was brought up in a privileged London, England home, the youngest of three siblings. Her father, who was raised in Cyprus, had left his childhood in the lemon and orange groves of the Mediterranean to become a wealthy importer of fruit in the UK.

Even as a child, Sliwowska had two passions: interior design and beauty therapy (known as esthetics in Canada). But her parents wanted her to have a professional career and convinced her that taking care of other people’s bodies would probably be disgusting. They settled for her enrolling in secretarial/business school.

Her training in marketing took Sliwowska to the Kingdom of Bahrain, where she worked for the New Zealand Dairy Board, and further travels saw her living in Athens and San Francisco before moving back to London. She married twice (the first time at 18) and gave birth to three children, to whom she devoted her full energy for many years.

During her second marriage, Sliwowska’s husband decided he wanted to emigrate to Canada. She was not convinced, but agreed to visit Salt Spring for a one-week holiday. Like so many other people on the island, that week was all it took.

“I fell madly in love with the place — it was exactly the place I wanted to live and raise my children,” Sliwowska said.

Despite her cosmopolitan upbringing, she dove into rural life, establishing a bed and breakfast and farm at the Old School House. She also started a successful interior design business. For family reasons Sliwowska returned to London in 2007, where she unexpectedly found herself single again.

In an effort to sort out her life, she enrolled in a course in beauty therapy, “to see if my parents were right or if I really did want to do it,” she explained. The results were amazingly positive: Sliwowska, never a devoted academic, was first in her class of 35 women.

The decision to really go ahead with her dream only came after returning to Salt Spring and successfully fighting a bout with cancer. Sliwowska explained, “It just woke me up to the importance of living your life true to who you are — and also using your gifts.”

As an interior designer, Sliwowska had discovered a gift for using colour and design to create a home that would be uplifting and restorative.

“I was pretty sure my other gift was a gift of giving through touch,” she said, noting that even a pedicure treatment transmits a powerful energy from provider to client.

“When I say beauty is healing, it’s because you’re nourishing yourself, taking time for yourself. You’re healing yourself.”

The business name, which came to her in a dream, is itself indicative of beauty’s therapeutic element. The fig is an ancient symbol of fertility and new beginnings, while honey is a natural antibiotic and antimicrobial.

Women’s empowerment is another connected aspect of her practice, Sliwowska said.

“I have an insatiable desire to support women. From travelling the world I’ve seen first hand that women really are the underdog.

“It’s empowering for women to come to the treatment centre . . . and just the fact that they’re giving me one hour to do something nice for them, is such a gift.”

Since opening her home spa, Sliwowska has come even closer to realizing her dream with the establishment of a natural product line. Items like face cream, nourishing oil and exfoliating scrub literally smell good enough to eat and are made with pure ingredients that actually could be ingested.

The products were created by Karen Dyke, who divides her time between Mill Bay and Salt Spring and is passionate about natural ingredients. Using no chemical additives or preservatives, she bases her creations on things like organic shea butter (sourced for the Figs and Honey line from a women’s collective in Ghana), unrefined beeswax, green tea and essential oils — and of course, figs and honey have not been left out.

Another component in the line, which Sliwowska especially desired, is natural gardenia scent. Normally synthesized because it is so hard to find, Dyke found a source of the real stuff in Tahiti, where it was sacred to the Polynesians.

With full product lines for women and men, spa services and massage offered by colleague Suzanne Ambers, Figs and Honey is finally at the place Sliwowska’s girlhood dreams suggested so long ago.

“Suddenly here I am — I’m in my element and I’m so excited,” Sliwowska said.

“I have this business and it’s something I really believe in.”

Figs and Honey Launch Party News

Figs and Honey LaunchLast night Figs & Honey celebrated the official launch of the Center and the entire Face & Body Product line!

It was a wonderful evening, filled with laughter and girly banter! The fabulous ladies of Salt Spring came to celebrate with me and have the first viewing and sampling session of all the Figs & Honey and Twigs & Berries Men’s line. I stood in awe of the loving support, camaraderie, friendship and love that filtered through the evening. A testament to me of everything this Center is about. I started the Center, wanting to connect with people on this island on a deeper level than the usual ‘hello’ that we all respectfully say, when passing through the daily chores of life. I wanted to have a loving, nurturing atmosphere for people to come and have treatments, receive healing, and really have the time to connect with what is really going on in their journey of self care and healing. Giving a relaxing facial to someone who is in desperate need of some self care is so satisfying, when you know that chances are its been a very long time since they have given themselves this gift. Helping to beautify someone’s hard working hands for that special treat is so exciting. Watching people come in, sign, breathe and start relaxing is like medicine for me too. I am in this profession to help, to heal to soothe and to beautify and last night I was so excited by the support of friends, strangers and loved one who are all behind me in my endeavour. I want to say that without thanking God every day, for every blessing my life, I truly dont feel I would have been able to have started what is now Figs & Honey Beauty and Healing. I send you all my blessings and thank you for taking the time to visit my site and taking the time to read this ‘News’. Blessings to you dear people.

Gardenia, A few Facts you may not Know

gardeniaFigs & Honey proudly uses Tahitian Gardenia Monoi.

Monoi means sacred oil. It has been used since the mists of time by Polynesians for its moisturizing virtues as well as in traditional pharamacopeia. No other product can boast two thousand years of successful individual testing. It is specific to French Polynesia because it is made from ‘tiare’ flowers (Gardenia Tahitensis) that are soaked in Copra Oil (Coconut Oil). Monoi de Tahiti Appelation d’Origine (AO) is the first cosmetic product to be protected by an international decree. Gardenia Tahitensis Flower the Tiare Flower, is Tahiti’s national flower. That variety, which is adapted to the Polynesian soils, grows everywhere in FrenchPolynesia and blossoms all year long. The air is full with the sweet smelling frangrance of this small white flower that grows on small three foot tall bushes. This flower is native to the Pacific Region and requires the action of men for its asexual reproduction, and therefore is achieved without seeds. The Gardenia Tahitensis bushes grows best on soils of Coral Origin. Tiare flowers are deeply rooted in the Polynesian cultural life. Indeed, they are much used in the flower necklaces which are offered to tourists as a welcome token on their arrival. The vahine (Polynesian women) also use them everyday to enhance their beauty. Among all Tahitian plants, the tiare is the one which is most used in traditional medicine. Although its active principles are not known yet, one thing is certain, the tiare is absolutely not toxic! In infusion with other essentia loils or as an external remedy, it is used to treat various problems, from mosquito bites to headaches and even liver cancer. Its flower buds, when crushed with a few drops of MONOI, are used to soothe ear aches or can be applied on wounds after mixing them with breadruit tree latex (Artocarpus Altilis) “ It appears undeniable to us that the tiare has a soothing effect.” Petard, 1986, Plantes Untiles De Polynesie.

Copra Oil (coconut Oil) another symbolic element of the Polynesian environment is also an ingredient of MONOI. The coconut tree called “haari” is Tahitian (Cocos nucifera) from ythe Palm tree family, and which was introduced during the first migrations, perfectly adapted itself to the Ploynesian soil and climate. Since the export of coconut oil resulted in a substantial need in coconuts a century ago, the coconut tree has ranked firs tin the Polynesian Flora, which is reflected by the great number of coconut groves around Polynesia. Since it is widely used in the domestic life, in the diet and the traditional medicine the coconut tree is closely associated with the settlement of the island and atolls of French Polynesia. I will mention here only a few of the numerous uses associated with it. It’s dried leaves make up the roofs of “fare” (Polynesian Houses), its trunk is used in carpentry work, its roots infused in herbal teas to help struggle against dysentery. The ‘coconut butter’ is easy to digest, does not go rancid easily and has aromatic qualities. The coconut water ‘pape haari’ is the perfect drink to quench one’s thirst. Moroever, it is completely sterile! it is a harmless diuretic product because of the presence of levulose, a type of sugar that is tolerated by people suffering from diabetes. Its pulp, when grated then squeezed, provides coconut milk, one of the basic ingredients in the Polynesian diet. Refined coconut oil is mainly used in the making of MONOI, and thus gives its natural moisturizing virtues. Once dried and grated, the pulp gives the famous coconut oil. Coconuts are harvested in the islands and atolls, the pulp is taken out of the shell and then dried under the sun. The dried pulp is then transported to the refinery, where the coconut oil is extracted through a pressing process. When the MONOI oil has solidified it is necessary to expose it to heat (natural sun, hot water or close to a heat source).

So…… this amazing Gardenia Monoi is in all the Gardenia products that contain Gardenia at Figs & Honey. If you notice the perfume seperating in cooler temperatures, warm it in the hand or a cup of warm water. I think this makes this product the REAL DEAL. The Hand and Body wash seperates because of the MONOI, It looks great and just needs a shake and it will be rich and luxurious.

Hope this article was not too long winded. Just another little Fact ……..
